약칭하여 '칭[青]'이라고도 부르며, 성도(省都)는 시닝[西宁]이다. 티베트고원 북동부에 있다. 한(汉) 나라 때는 창족[羌族]의 영토였고, 수(隋) 나라 때는 서해(西海)와 하원(河源) 등의 군(郡)을 설치하였으며, 당(唐) 나라 때는 토번(吐蕃)의 영토였다. 청(清) 나라 때는 간쑤성[甘肃省] 서녕부(西宁府) 청해몽고부(青海蒙古部)였고, 남쪽은 옥수(玉树) 등 토사(土司)의 영지였으며, 1928년에 성(省)이 설치되었다.
면적은 72만여㎢이며, 행정구역은 황난[黄南]·궈뤄[果洛]·위수[玉树] 등 6개 자치주와 1개 지구, 1개 지급시(地級市)와 2개 현급시(县級市), 30개 현, 7개 자치현으로 이루어져 있다.
동부 지역에 신석기시대부터 씨족사회의 인류가 거주하였으며, 한(汉) 나라 때 창족과 중원의 한족(漢族)이 대거 유입되었다. 청(清) 나라 함풍(咸丰) 연간에 시닝에 이주해온 인구만 30여만 명에 달하였다.
주민 구성은 한족·짱족[藏族]·몽골족[蒙古族]·후이족[回族]·투족[土族]·싸라족[撒拉族]·하싸커족[哈萨克族] 등 43개 민족으로 이루어져 있으며, 소수민족의 비율은 45.51%이다. 펑황산[凤凰山]과 우펑산[五峰山], 라오예산[老爷山] 등지에서 해마다 열리는 소수민족의 '꽃' 축제가 특별한 정취를 자아낸다.

한국 산둥성 교류 활성화 협약 조인식
롯데그룹 여행사인 (주)롯데JTB와 중국 산둥성 여유국은 한국과 산둥성 간 교류 활성화를 위해 2009년 2월 24일(화) 낮 12시 서울 명동 롯데JTB 회의실에서 협약 조인식을 가졌습니다.
이에 따라 산둥성을 여행하는 한국 관광객들이 더욱 편리하고 수준 높은 서비스를 받을 수 있게 되었습니다.
롯데JTB와 상호 업무 지원 협약을 맺고 있는 한중협회는 이 날 이성우 협회장과 이종세 고문이 참석하여 조인식을 축하하였습니다.
